Help us Thursday to clean up Harrington House yard

For those who have driven by Harrington House, located on the corner of El Dorado and Harding streets, you will have noticed the landscape has become weed chocked and overgrown.

On Thursday, a community service crew lead by Ron Wormuth, director of men’s services for Jordon Recovery Center, and volunteers from Rural Human Services, will spend the day cleaning up the yard. Additional help is always needed.  Please join us at 8 a.m. and throughout the day.

The efforts lead by Jordan Recovery Center and Harrington House volunteers will be a visual improvement to this area of town and all that drive by.  We hope to see lots of community members who believe in the work we do and can devote a few hours to improving our community’s resource center and shelter for victims of domestic violence and their children.

Harrington House is a vital part of Del Norte County. Last year alone, 3,548 shelter nights were provided, 10,235 meals served, and 6,500 individual and group counseling sessions were held. Over 800 victims of domestic violence and their children received services.

Harrington House is a program of Rural Human Services. For more information, call me  465-3013.

Whitney Vincent making big difference for seniors, pets

Crescent City’s own “Dog Whisperer,” Whitney Vincent, deserves a big wag of the tail for her help with the seniors and their dogs at Redwood Cove Community Center.

She has demonstrated the unique ability to quickly key in on, then gently and intelligently correct, the humans’ bad behavior; the pets fall right in to step without question. She’s kept up the visits with the owners and pets until everyone is happy.

As one of our residents with two rambunctious Chihuahuas put it, “Since I met Whitney my life has changed. I have a lot less stress and I’m not worried about my dog’s behavior anymore.”

Thanks Whitney for understanding how important well-behaved pets are to the life and health of our community and residents.

Good old boys the reason why sheriff wasn’t punished

You know, if people break the law, it seems that most of us have to pay the darn price. Am I right? I know that I’m right.

At the time of the primary election the law apparently got broke by the sheriff by wearing his badge and uniform while at campaign events. That in itself is a midemeanor charge but it seems like it was swept under the carpet, and he didn’t go to jail. But that is the good old boys for ya.

Thompson’s brand of reform doesn’t protect Americans

I just wanted to address the July 24 Coastal Voices piece by U.S. Mike Thompson, “Reform protects ordinary Americans.”

Really? Like the 2,000-plus-page health care reform bill that had all the other good stuff hidden inside and got jammed down our throats? Like the GM takeover and also the takeover of so many banks?

Now the government controls Wall Street because Big Brother always knows what’s best for all of us dumb U.S. citizens. I don’t remember us citizens getting a chance to vote on any of the aforementioned?

I hear the next thing on the government’s agenda is to go after our freedom of the press. After all we can’t have those pesky news stations like Fox enlightening the citizens with the truth.

Do we really need the government controlling any more than they already do? It has been said, “A government big enough to give you everything you need is powerful enough to take everything you have.”

If you want a country that is completely government-dominated and controlled, then please move to China or some other country and leave America, our freedoms, our Constitution, and all our rights alone!
