McMurray and Sons was here since 1985
After almost 24 years in Crescent City, McMurray and Sons Roofing closed its local office last week and laid off seven workers.
“We’re just not having the amount of revenue needed to keep it viable,” Cathy Minkema, the controller for McMurray and Sons, said Monday while a crew from Eureka cleaned up the office and warehouse on Northcrest Drive.
The Crescent City office did roofing, insulation, gutter and garage work in the local area and Brookings.
McMurray and Sons will keep its “workmanship warranties” for Crescent City customers and will continue doing repairs and new work out of its Eureka office at 1818 W. Allard Ave.
Minkema said the company had been “studying” the Crescent City office for a year or so, trying to figure out a way to expand the local market and generate more business.
Then the economy took a turn for the worse.
“The recession was the deciding factor,” Minkema said.
In addition, there are “a lot” of roofing contractors in Crescent City, Minkema said — five, according to the telephone directory.
At one time the local office was a bigger operation with nearly 20 employees, she said.
It wasn’t a decision that was made “quietly or easily,” she said. Cuts have been made at the other McMurray and Sons locations — the company is trying to keep a low overhead to remain a “viable company,” Minkema said.
“We agonized over it,” she said about the decision to close the Crescent City branch. “We’ve been here a long time.”
The 90-year-old business moved from Des Moines, Iowa, to Eureka in 1964, doing both residential and commercial roofing jobs.
McMurray and Sons opened the Crescent City office in 1985; Grants Pass and Bend, Ore., branches soon followed in the 1990s.
All week, a crew from Eureka will be clearing out the warehouse on Northcrest Drive. Sachio Tanuma, a supervisor at the Eureka headquarters, said that everything should be out by the end of the week.
He added that McMurray and Sons will be donating three trucks to the Del Norte County‚ÄąUnified School District and recycling its scrap metal and tile. All the other inventory, insulation and roofing supplies will go to the other branches.
