Salmon fishing rules head state discussion

The California Fish and Game Commission will meet in Arcata on Thursday and Friday.

Among other agenda items, the commission will consider river and ocean salmon fishing rules.

Also, local fisherman Ben Taylor will request the commission to send plain clothes wardens to patrol the Smith River and block poaching.

Taylor also will ask for funding to monitor the Smith River, collect more data and better manage the resource and its inhabitants.

The Thursday meeting will start at 10 a.m. in Nelson Hall West-Goodwin Forum in Humboldt State University at 1 Harpst St. in Arcata. Friday's meeting begins at 8:30 a.m. in the same location.

The commission meets about once each month in a different part of the state to set regulations, permits, licenses, management policies and consider other issues.
