A court date for a criminal case on a blighted property in downtown Crescent City has been bumped back again.
Del Norte Superior Court Judge Robert Weir last week set a Feb. 2 court date for John Diehl, owner of the Square Deal hardware store and lumber yard on U.S. Hwy. 101, between Fourth and Fifth streets.
Diehl faces 54 misdemeanor charges related to code violations at the site.
Diehl, who serves as his own attorney, has filed motions that led to disqualifying Del Norte County Superior Court judges, as well as a visiting judge, from the case.
The Judicial Council of California a San Francisco-based policymaking body of the state court system that works on ensuring fair trials still must assign a replacement.
Diehl also filed a motion to disqualify City Attorney Thomas French as prosecutor of the case. French represents the City Council and political interests and poses a conflict of interest, according to Diehl's court filing.
