More than 1,400 coats will warm the bodies and hearts of local families starting this weekend, thanks to the generosity of the community.

Bicoastal Media Radio’s Coats For Kids Campaign brought in 1,484 coats, almost 400 more than last year, according to a press release.
“This year, we were able to provide a record number of new coats for preschools and school-age children,” said Rene Shanle-Hutzell, general manager of Bicoastal Media.
“We would not be able to fill all the requests if it weren’t for the generosity of our community, sponsors and donations through the Wild Rivers Community Foundation, Del Norte Ambulance, Pacific Power employees, Mark Ritchie Construction, Smith River Rancheria, Sutter Coast Hospital and anonymous coat donors.”
The coats will be distributed today at the Family Resource Center, 494 Pacific Ave., from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“This is the kind of thing the Family Resource Center loves to do,” said Cathy Tryon, the center’s resource and referral coordinator. “We want to see every child and adult get a warm coat.”
Several youths from Coastal Connections turned out Friday to help with the sorting of coats for today’s distribution. Sizes range from infant to adult.
