3-hour standoff for suicide threat

Law enforcement officers were in a three-hour standoff with a burglary suspect who was threatening to kill himself at the fairgrounds late Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

The California Highway Patrol responded to a call about a burglary at the Fairgrounds at 11:51 p.m. on Wednesday. Upon their arival, officers saw Jacob McGuffin, 18, lying down, according to CHP officer Mark Bailey.

When officers approached McGuffin, he drew a large knife and told officers he was going to kill himself.

CHP officers backed off and called the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office for help negotiating with McGuffin, Bailey said..

“After approximately three hours we were able to get the knife away from the subject. It ended peacefully,” Bailey said.

McGuffin was transported to Sutter Coast to get minor cuts checked out before being booked into the county jail.

Bailey said nothing was stolen, but a side building had been broken into and damaged, and McGuffin had left some personal effects inside the structure.

McGuffin is charged with resisting a public officer in an emergency, obstructing an executive officer and burglary.

“Our intent at this point is to get him some help,” Bailey said.

McGuffin’s bond has been set at $50,000.
