9 days left for filing of candidacies

Care to serve Crescent City? What about Del Norte’s schools and special districts?

Only nine days are left to declare candidacy for local office, no petition signatures or fees required.

Three seats on the Crescent City Council, three on the Harbor Commission, three on the Health Care District and two on the Library District will be on the Nov. 6 ballot, along with the city clerk position.

The harbor, health care and library district offices are filled by county-wide election, meaning anybody old enough and living in Del Norte can run for any open seat.

City Council

The positions of incumbents Kathryn Murray and Donna Westfall are on the fall ballot. Murray has filed the paperwork to seek another term. So far, Westfall hasn’t.

Councilman Rick Holley was appointed to fill a vacancy this year and will seek election for a full term.

But City Planning Commission members Ron Gastineau and Joseph Aliotti could shake things up. Both men have filed papers to run, (both also applied for the appointment Holley got back in January).

The top three vote-getters will be the winners.

School Board

In contrast with county-wide positions, the two Del Norte Unified School District trustee seats on the ballot are only open to residents of Districts 3 or 4. Frances Costello is the incumbent in District 3, and she’s running again, so far unopposed. The current District 4 trustee, James Maready, isn’t running, and two people have thrown their hats in the ring: Jacklyn Engelsma and Judith Cordts.

District 3’s western edge begins at the Pacific and runs north to the county line and southeast along the North Bank of the Smith, stretching due south on the east side of U.S. Highway 101 at Dr. Fine Bridge, skirting urbanized areas of Crescent City and including Hiouchi, Gasquet and South Fork Road.

District 4 covers all of Fort Dick and Lake Earl, stretching from the coast eastward just north of Dead Lake. It includes some neighborhoods around the west side of Northcrest Drive and both sides of Lake Earl Drive.

School Board districts are the same as county supervisor districts. Maps of the districts are available online at http://www.co.del-norte.ca.us.

Harbor Commission

Harbor commissioners Wes White, Scott Feller and James Ramsey are seeking re-election. Dylan Clawson and David Alvarez have announced they will challenge the status quo.

The top three vote-getters will be the winners.

City Clerk

City Clerk Robin Patch was the only applicant for her current job, as of Wednesday.

Library District

So far, two incumbents have filed for three open seats on the Library District: Colleen Luttrell and John Mertes. The district’s Board of Trustees came under fire in this year’s Grand Jury report for making “an effort in concert not to have more than one person running for any seat vacancy,” possibly as a cost-saving measure.

No Library District seats have actually made it onto a ballot since 1990, the Grand Jury noted.

Health Care District

Three incumbents on the Health Care District are the only names in the mix right now: Clarke Moore, Kevin Caldwell and Dwayne Riechlin.

And more ...

Forty-two positions on various community service and fire protection districts are up in November. A complete list  is available at the County Clerk’s Office, 981 H St.

The filing window closes at 5 p.m. Aug. 10. Almost all county offices are closed that day, but Clerk Alissia Northrup will be working, she said. Anyone stopping by to file that day should use the Flynn Center entrance that’s closer to 9th Street.
