A third of ballots are already cast

Almost a third of Del Norte County’s registered voters had already cast their ballots Friday afternoon, and the elections director reminded people who still have their mail ballots that it’s too late to safely put them in the mail.

Since the ballots must be physically received by Tuesday, they should no longer be put in the mail, said County Clerk Alissia Northrup.

Instead, they should be brought to the county Elections Office, 981 H St., or dropped off at one of the 18 polling places that will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday. A list of polling places appears on Page A7 today.

Voters who are unsure which precinct they’re in can call the Elections Office, 465-0383.

Northrup said 4,100 mail ballots had been received by Friday afternoon. As many as 2,893 more mail ballots could still be returned, she said. The most recent total count of
registered voters countywide was 12,516.

The ballot is a full one, with contests for offices ranging from U.S. president to Crescent City Harbor commissioner, as well as a host of measures.

In Del Norte, both Democratic and Republican Party headquarters will host get-togethers to await results on Election Night.

County Democratic Headquarters is at 1044 Highway 101 North. The County Republican Party’s headquarters is on Third and I streets in downtown Crescent City.

District 1 County Supervisor Leslie McNamer said this week she will be awaiting results at her campaign headquarters, 280 I St.

Her challenger, Roger Gitlin, said he’ll either be at the Elections Office or at Republican headquarters.
