Annual candlelight walk on Saturday at Prairie Creek |
What could make eerie redwood stands even more otherworldly? How about a walk in the dark? The 22nd Annual Candlelight Walk through the Ancient Redwoods at Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park will be held Saturday as part of activities running from 5 to 8 p.m. Participants will be greeted at the Prairie Creek visitor center with snacks and desert, including Palm Cafe pie, Requa Inn clam chowder and cookies, Woodland Villa smoked tri-tip and bread pudding and La Hacienda chile verde appetizers. There will be a silent auction and a Dutch raffle with dozens of local prizes, including gourmet cheese baskets, signed photographs, golf certificates, wine baskets, beer baskets, dining gift certificates, jewelry and art. While participants pick prizes for bidding or raffling at the visitor center, music will be provided by Job Parmentier. “Park rangers will be on hand to answer any question about the park,” said Debi White, North District manager for the Redwood Parks Association. Park rangers will then guide the group through a candle-lit section of redwoods to the campfire site, weather permitting, where they will listen to stories by the North Coast Storytellers Association. Carol Larsen, who is Paiute/Pit River/ Chippewa Native American and a tribal member of Susanville Indian Rancheria, will share tales passed down from her ancestors. Dan O'Gara will share multi-cultural tales he picked up while teaching South America, Asia and the North Coast. A donation of $5 per person is suggested. Kids get in free, as well as members of the Redwood Parks Association. The event is hosted by the Redwood Parks Association and Redwood National & State Parks. Prairie Creek Visitor Center is located on the Newton B. Drury Parkway, five miles north of Orick or 30 miles south of Crescent City. For more information call 707-465-7327. |
