Crescent City Police Officer Justin Gill responded to Rite Aid around noon regarding a suspicious male who was stuffing items into his clothing, Plack said.
Gill approached the male, later identified as 27-year-old Troy Brinson, Plack said.
Brinson began refusing commands made by Gill and became irate, stating several times that he couldn’t receive another “gun charge,” Plack said.
“A struggle took both parties to the ground in front of the business,” said Plack.
During the struggle a loaded .357 Smith & Wesson revolver fell from Brinson’s waistband, Plack said.
As Gill attempted to gain control and keep Brinson away from the gun, he began striking the officer in the face, Plack said.
Brinson was able to break from Gill’s grasp, which is when he was Tasered by Officer Jennifer Owen and subsequently handcuffed, Plack said.
A woman wearing a blue and black backpack, who was with Brinson, was able to flee the scene, Plack said.
Brinson was taken to Sutter Coast Hospital so the Taser probes could be removed before he was booked on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm, battery on a peace officer, burglary and vehicle theft.
Gill suffered some bruising, Plack said.
The vehicle theft charge was connected with a stolen 2010 Ford F150 pickup truck from Eureka.
About an hour after the arrest, the stolen vehicle was located on the 800 block of L Street with two people inside, Plack said.
Julie Osborne, 19, and Robert Shepherd, 48, of Brookings were found contained in the truck, Plack said. There was also property suspected of being stolen during burglaries in Brookings as well as the truck’s actual license plates, Plack said.
Some of the items in the truck included electronics, guns, jewelry, ammunition and cell phones, Plack said.
The police department is now working with Brookings authorities to find the owners of the property and whether there are any other burglary victims, Plack said.
Shepherd and Osborne were arrested on suspicion of vehicle theft, illegal possession of a firearm and receiving stolen property.
