Arson suspect turns himself in

A local man was arrested  Tuesday in connection with a recreational vehicle fire in Crescent City.

Around 6 a.m. Sunday, a man inside an RV at Bayside RV Park was alerted his passenger door was on fire, said sheriff’s Commander Bill Steven.

When authorities arrived, the man and another person had already extinguished the fire, Steven said.

Evidence at the scene, including a smell of fuel in the air and a camp fuel can, suggested it to be arson, Steven said.

The Sheriff’s Office received information that Michael Loftin, 31, of Crescent City, was involved, Steven said.

“He got wind that he was a suspect in the arson and turned himself in to the Sheriff’s Office,” said Steven.

While Loftin did not make any statements, but evidence suggests he was the person who set the fire, Steven said.

Loftin was arrested on suspicion of maliciously setting a fire and criminal conspiracy.
