The Del Norte Family Resource Center will give away more than 500 backpacks stuffed with school supplies Wednesday.
The center collected enough money to purchase the backpacks and fill them with pencils, pencil sharpeners, paper, binders, crayons, glue sticks and other school supplies, facilities coordinator Cathy Tryon said. Donations came from the Crescent City Rotary Club, Dr. Kevin Caldwell and numerous anonymous donors.
“We had one lady do about a $500 donation,” Tryon said. “We’ve had a lot of anonymous donations coming in also ranging from $50 to $200. We’re at our goal.”
Earlier this month, the center had only received enough donations for 325 backpacks and representatives were worried they wouldn’t have enough to meet demand. The center gave out 600 backpacks last year, thanks to a donation from Sutter Coast Hospital.
The backpack giveaway will start at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Family Resource Center, 494 Pacific Ave., Crescent City. Tryon said the resource center will close at 4 p.m. that day. She added that any child who wants a backpack should be accompanied by an adult.
