Del Norte County Sheriff’s deputies apprehended a man being sought as a suspect in an assault, burglary and vehicle theft case on Sunday.
Michael Clary Jr., 27, was apprehended at the McDonald’s on U.S. Highway 101 at 11:55 a.m. after leading deputies on a short chase through town, Sheriff’s Commander Bill Steven said.
The Sheriff’s Office received a call at 10:13 a.m. advising that they believed that Clary was on the 700 block of Elk Valley Drive, but deputies were unable to locate Clary upon their arrival, Steven said.
At about 11:33 a.m. deputies thought they saw Clary riding a bike through the library parking lot and tried to stop him, Steven said.
Clary took off on his bike past the National Park building and back toward Front Street before turning right and heading toward 3rd Street, Steven said.
Clary made it to the travel lodge, where he ditched his bike and backpack and continued on foot with deputies in pursuit, Steven said.
When he reached the McDonald’s, Clary attempted to hide on the east side of the building. Deputies found him and arrested him at gunpoint, Steven said.
Deputies recovered the bike and backpack, Steven said. Clary was booked into the Del Norte County Jail on an assault and battery charge. Bail was set at $100,000.
