With a new name and a new menu the new owners of the brewery say they'll be open for business on the Fourth of July no matter what.
Lori and Ken Cowan are pressing hard the next four weeks to clean up the idle brewery building which will be named Surfside Grill and Brewery.
"We'll be open just to open up, because we know it's a big, big day there," said Lori Cowan, who is still in St. Louis running the couple's three other restaurants and trying to sell their home before moving here.
None of the brewery's beer will be available until about August, however.
The Cowans plan to offer other microbrews besides their own and will also serve Coors and Budweiser, she said.
Ken Cowan arrived here Thursday to begin the cleanup and landscaping work.
Once the couple shifts their permanent residence to Del Norte and winter sets in, Lori Cowan said they will begin remodeling the interior.
"It's going to make it a lot more comfortable and we're going to add a meeting room large enough for about 20 people," she said.
The restaurant side of the business will serve what she calls "upscale family fare."
Sandwiches, steaks, pasta and chicken, but not over-priced, she said.
"We have two little girls and I'm very big on being able to walk into a restaurant with my family and not be robbed," she said.
The Surfside Grill and Brewery owners hope to rekindle the economic development hopes of the community that were originally invested and lost in Jefferson State Brewery before it went belly-up two years ago.
Public money to help get Jefferson State Brewery up and running back in 1998 came from the Del Norte County government, the Crescent City government and the Tri-Agency Economic Development Authority.
The business died in 2000.
