BROOKINGS Gary Milliman will be Brookings' next city manager.
Milliman, currently the city manager of South Gate, was one of three candidates for the position. The Brookings City Council unanimously approved his employment contract Tuesday. He is expected to begin July 9.
Milliman will replace Interim City Manager Ken Hobson, who had replaced former manager Dale Shaddox. Shaddox left in January.
The council's decision comes after a day's worth of interviews on May 14 where all three candidates Milliman, Lewis Griffin and Werner Buehler fielded questions from the council and city staffers.
Milliman will receive $90,000 salary for his first year with a possible increase to $95,000 if the council votes for the bump after an annual performance review, according to the employment agreement.
Milliman has spent the last four years as the city manager for South Gate, according to his resume. While there, he provided plans to deal with a severe financial crisis, dealt with complex personnel and contractual issues, and recruited management staff.
With 30 years of experience, Milliman said he has "extensive experience as a management generalist."
He received a bachelor's in journalism from California State College and a master's in public administration from the University of Southern California.
