Business owner is fatally shot
Police say he struggled with another manLocal business owner Mike Napoli was fatally shot in a business associate’s house in Crescent City on Sunday night, authorities said Monday. No arrests have been made as the investigation continues, Police Chief Doug Plack said. At around 8:10 p.m., a call was made by Donnell Parker to report an accidental discharge of a firearm at his residence at 955 A St., Plack said. When officers arrived, they found Napoli lying on his back in the dining room, Plack said. Napoli, 41, stopped breathing shortly after authorities arrived; he suffered what appeared to be a gunshot wound to his chest, Plack said. Officer Justin Gill and Fire Department personnel administered CPR until an ambulance arrived, Plack said. Parker, 47, was later detained and interviewed by investigators from the city police and the District Attorney’s Office, Plack said. Napoli, owner of Tech Town Computers, and Parker knew each other, Plack said. “They had business transactions in the past,” the chief said. Plack offered this narrative of what investigators believe happened Sunday night: When Napoli arrived at the house, he was let inside and an argument ensued about money owed to him, Plack said. Napoli reportedly pulled out a pistol, and Parker then jumped out of his chair and fought with Napoli, Plack said. During the entanglement, the gun apparently went off, Plack said. “This is a situation between two people that are acquainted with each other who had a heated discussion that escalated into a tragic ending,” said Plack. Authorities secured the premises until about noon Monday while evidence was gathered by the Department of Justice, Plack said. The DOJ was called upon to provide resources the CCPD doesn’t have, Plack said. Samples were taken from Parker and from Napoli’s body to detect whether either had recently fired a gun, Plack said. “Obviously this is an early investigation and we’ve got a lot more to do,” said Plack. An autopsy is planed and results should be released next week, said a spokesman at the Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office and the Crescent City Volunteer Fire Department assisted with the response. |
