Car chase ends in three arrests on Muncey Lane

The California Highway Patrol and Del Norte Sheriff’s Office made multiple arrests after recovering a stolen vehicle on Wednesday.

A California Highway Patrol officer noticed a 1990 Buick LeSabre traveling north on Elk Valley Road near Iowa Street. The officer recognized the vehicle as stolen and turned around to try to pursue the vehicle but lost it, according to CHP officer Brian Clemann.

The CHP, with the assistance of the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office, was able to locate the vehicle in the side yard of a residence on the 1700 block of Muncey Lane, Clemann said.

Sheriff’s deputies found the suspects hiding inside the residence, Clemann said. After brief interviews with the subjects, the sheriff’s office was able to establish probable cause to arrest Austin Maecham, the suspected driver, for taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent.

Veronica Downs, the suspected passenger, was arrested for intent to defraud, falsify, alter, forge or pass checks or bonds. According to Clemann, she will likely have another charge of taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent added because according to state law a passenger in a stolen vehicle is just as responsible as the driver.

The Sheriff’s Office also arrested Darrell Friday, 54, of Crescent City, who was in the residence on Muncey Lane when law enforcement arrived.

Deputies arrested Friday for failure to appear at a drug court and also for a charge for possession of a dangerous weapon.

David Moore, also present at the Muncey residence, was arrested and released.
