City might allocate $50,000 to library for ADA compliance

The City Council on Monday will consider allocating $50,000 in community development block grant funds to help the Del Norte County Library complete its effort in becoming compliant with the Americans with Disability Act.

Library trustee Tedd Ward said the book-lending institution started work on becoming compliant with the act three years ago when it received a grant from First 5 Del Norte to build a children's area.

"We realized that before we would do any significant construction we needed to go through the process of becoming ADA compliant," Ward said.

The library has already built an ADA compliant ramp to the front door and two ADA compliant bathrooms. However, it still needs money to build ADA-compliant fire escapes and front door, according to Ward.

The children's area will be complete next month, Ward said.

Ward said the money would really benefit the cash strapped library. "We're essentially keeping the door open by grants, donation and CBDG funds just like this," he said.

Also to be discussed at Monday night's meeting:

• A resolution in support of a measure to secure local transportation funding.

• Consideration of a public resources policy statement.

• A revision to the city employee computer loan program.

• A resolution supporting the ballot initiative for the library.
