Coast Guard chopper rescues Medford man

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter needed to airlift a Medford, Ore., man after he suffered a severe compound fracture of his lower leg while riding his ATV Friday in Curry County.

The helicopter was needed to rescue Joe Johnson, 58, of Medford, because Curry County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue could not safely transport Johnson over the ground due to rugged terrain. Johnson crashed his ATV on a trail about four miles south-east of Oak Flat Camp Ground in Agness, Ore.

To take Johnson from the area, the Coast Guard helicopter hovered above the crash site while a rescue swimmer descended and lifted Johnson from the ground.

He was brought to the Gold Beach airport, before Cal-Ore Ambulance transported him to the Curry General Hospital. But due the serious nature of Johnson's injury, the ambulance service took him to Crescent City. He was then taken to Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford.
