For Cody Hoffman’s final college football game at Brigham Young University he got to come a little closer to home than usual.

BYU plays its home games in Provo, Utah, roughly a 14-hour drive from Del Norte, and many of the Cougars’ road games are even farther.

But BYU’s final game of 2013 was in San Francisco in the Fight Hunger Bowl, just six hours south at the home park of Major League Baseball’s San Francisco Giants.

“The ballpark was really nice when it was converted into a football field,” said Cody’s mother, Cindy Hoffman.

Last year, BYU played in the Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego and the year before that the Cougars traveled all the way to Dallas, Texas, to play in the Armed Forces Bowl. Although Cody’s parents, Cindy and Rick Hoffman, have made the trip to those bowl games to watch their son play, it was a little too far for most people to travel.

This year, Cindy estimated, at least 100 friends and family took advantage of the opportunity to see Hoffman and the Cougars play Washington  in the Fight Hunger Bowl at AT&T Park in San Francisco.

“We had some friends from Washington that are BYU fans come, we have some family that live down in that area, and then there were a lot of people from here that have moved down there that went.”

Although the game didn’t turn out like Cody or his Del Norte contingent had hoped, with BYU losing 31-16 to Washington, the 2008 Del Norte High School graduate was spectacular in his final bowl game. Hoffman had a team-high 12 catches for 167 yards, including eight catches in the first half.

Hoffman leaves BYU as the career leader in receptions with 260, in receiving yards with 3,612 and in receiving touchdowns with 33.

Salt Lake Tribune called Hoffman and senior linebacker Kyle Van Noy “a couple of the best players in BYU football history,” going on to say that Cody will be a difficult player to replace.

Over the holidays Hoffman was able to catch a few days at home to visit friends and family, but he was off again today to start practicing for the Senior Bowl, which takes place on Jan. 25.

“He is home until tomorrow morning, then he is heading to L.A. for the next adventure,” Cindy said on Monday.

In addition to the senior bowl, Hoffman will spend the rest of the winter and spring preparing for the NFL Draft. Hoffman is projected to be picked in the top three rounds in most mock drafts. CBS Sports currently has him rated as the 22nd best receiver in the class and the 162nd best player overall.
