Commercial ocean salmon season set

Recreational season runs from May to September

For the first time in several years, there will be a commercial ocean salmon season on the North Coast this summer.

The recreational 2013 ocean salmon season from the Oregon-California border to Horse Mountain is also generous, lasting from May 1 to Sept. 8, with a two-salmon (not including coho) per day limit and a Chinook minimum size limit of 20 inches.

Ranging from 1,500 to 3,000 fish per month, summer commercial quotas are slim and might be reached quickly, but fishermen will have an opportunity every month from May through September.

From the Oregon-California border to Humboldt South Jetty, commerical fishermen will be allowed 3,000 salmon in May, 3,000 salmon in June, 2,000 salmon starting July 15, 1,500 salmon in August and 6,000 salmon starting Sept. 16.

Once the quota is reached, salmon fishing will be closed until the next quota period. Any remaining portion of the May, June and/or July Chinook quotas may be transferred to the next open quota period.  There is a landing and possession limit of 20 Chinook per vessel per day, of at least 27 inches. Fishing is allowed seven days per week.
