Company still hasn’t opened a fish market

The Crescent City Planning Commission has granted another extension to Top Blue Marine to allow the fish exporter to open a fish market, which was a required condition of its use permit when it opened.

Top Blue Marine, which is housed in the old Surfside Brewery building on Front Street, is in the commercial waterfront district, so a retail component is required of the business.

After already granting the business one six-month extension to get the fish market running, two planning commissioners voted against the three-month extension.

“They had a year to get it going and they didn’t do it,” said Commissioner Rick Nolan, who was joined in dissenting by Blake Inscore. “My position was that they could certainly resubmit an application once they are ready to go, but they need to stop operating at this point and get the business put together as needed within that zone.”

Associate planner Eric Taylor said the leniency from the Planning Commission reflects the general economic difficulties of the current times.

“For this county everyone is concerned with jobs and if there are jobs there, they don’t want to just throw it away,” Taylor said. “I think if they don’t have (the fish market) in the next three months, they’ll shut it down, because everyone’s had enough.”

Top Blue Marine’s permit will be re-evaluated at the end of the extension during the Planning Commission’s November meeting.
