The Del Norte County Board of Supervisors' first meeting of the new year ended with new leadership for the governing body and the initial funding to repair the Roy Rook boat ramp.

At Tuesday's meeting – the first for newly elected supervisors Mike Sullivan and Gerry Hemmingsen – David Finigan replaced former supervisor Sarah Sampels as board chairman, while Leslie McNamer retained her position as vice-chairman.

"Our agenda will be honoring process and moving the county forward," Dave Finigan said after taking his newly elected seat.

One of the board's first steps was approving a $500,000 budget transfer from the Capital Projects and FEMA/OES budgets to repair the Roy Rook boat ramp.

The ramp, along with another at Klamath Townsite, are in need of repair and replacement, respectively, after they were damaged in a New Year's weekend flood of the Klamath River in 2005.

"We're tasked with getting these things rebuilt and replaced,"said Assistant County Administrative Officer Jay Sarina, who's coordinating the project.

"This is our best our best bet to get work done at Roy Rook," he said.

The board also rang in the new year by honoring two former supervisors, Chuck Blackburn and Sampels, for their years of service to Del Norte County.

In addition, the board voted to write a letter of support to Assemblymember Patty Berg, D-Eureka, to dedicate the section of U.S. Highway 101, between Doctor Fine Bridge and the Oregon border, to slain California Highway Patrol Officer Ernest R. Felio who was killed in the line of duty.
