Curry fire season opens with a blaze

The first wildfire of the summer season ignited north of Ophir in the north end of Curry County around noon Wednesday.

Those on scene reported that the fire, estimated at 55 acres Wednesday afternoon, was burning in second-growth trees and spreading up a hillside.

A helicopter from Coos Bay was summoned and another aerial apparatus from Douglas Air was reportedly in the air about 20 minutes later. The pilot said he was over the Camas Valley and could see smoke.

Tankers were dispatched, as was a 500-gallon truck, one 15-man crew, three foresters and a crew of six, as well as a bulldozer. Crews from Shutter Creek Correctional Institution were also assembled.

Fire officials in the area have been worried for months about the upcoming fire season after a relatively dry winter and high winds in the past week. High temperatures in the valley have also been recorded in May and June.
