GOLD BEACH, Ore. Curry County residents overwhelming voted Tuesday to recall Sheriff Mark Metcalf.
"The people have spoken," all three Curry County commissioners said to start separate telephone interviews from their homes.
"I guess they wanted him out of office," Commissioner Georgia Nowlin said. "We'll go forward with appointing a sheriff. One way or another, it will have to be addressed."
Early returns showed voters saying 65-35 percent they wanted a new sheriff.
"We won it," said David Darnell, who headed up the signature gathering drive in both recall attempts. "I know the sheriff's department is really happy. It's all over town. They're really happy it turned out this way."
Sandy Ensley of Brookings, described as one of the hardest workers in gathering signatures for the recall petition, said she spent a lot of time gathering those signatures.
Ensley said she hoped the county commission appoints someone outside the department as sheriff.
