Snow is expected to fall on high terrain as the week winds down, which could affect pre-holiday travelers.

The heaviest snowfall is anticipated Thursday, when it could layer the mountains 3,000 feet and above with up to 2 inches per hour; a foot total is expected by the end of today at the highest elevations.

“On (U.S. Highway 199) it looks like the worst part will be up near the Collier Tunnel,” said Scott Carroll, a meteorologist for  the National Weather Service in Eureka.

On the coast, Del Norters should anticipate rain through the weekend, Carroll said. Winds up to 60 mph may be felt inland, with gusts reaching up to 40 mph on the coast today.

With high winds and heavy snow inland, visibility could be severely limited while driving, Carroll said.
