Decision to punch officer earns man two years in prison

Due to what Del Norte County District Attorney Mike Riese dubbed a "defiant act of stupidity," a Crescent City man will spend two years of his life in a prison cell for punching his probation officer.

John Patrick Bering, 26, was sentenced Thursday in the Del Norte County Superior Court to two years in prison for his violent outburst — when he only should have received probation.

According to Riese, Bering would have been given probation for a misdemeanor domestic violence conviction for hitting his wife.

However, on Nov. 9, Bering had a meeting with his probation officer regarding a previous domestic violence conviction.

He showed up drunk and struck his P.O., an act worthy of a two-year sentence.
