FAIR SETS RECORDS, RODEO A HUGE HIT

Last weekends Del Norte County fair shattered records.

We had a very successful year, said Fair Manager Randy Hatfield.

Revenues were up 22 percent over 1999, Hatfield said, and although rain put a damper on the fair for one day last year, revenues were still up 5 percent over 1998.

More kids availed themselves of Kids Day bargains, registering a surge of 14 percent and the return of the rodeo proved to be a popular move.

The rodeo was up a lot. It was huge, Hatfield said.

The livestock auction, which raises money for Future Farmers of America and 4-H participants, was up $20,000 over last year and grossed more than $100,000.

The 4-H and FFA kids are extremely happy. It was great support by the community, Hatfield said.

The carnival also benefitted from presale tickets, and more will be available next year. Free parking for fairgoers also proved popular.

We almost ran out, but thats good, Hatfield said.

A firm count on attendance wont be available for two weeks, Hatfield said.

He estimates the number was close to 30,000 going through the gate.

Hatfield said the staff at the fair, service clubs and volunteers all did great jobs over a period of months to make the fair a success.

Its a real dedication by everybody, Hatfield said. You cant put on an event like this without those kinds of people.
