Fire Chief Minton named acting forest supervisor

Six Rivers National Forest Fire Chief Mike Minton will be Acting Forest Supervisor until September while a new permanent supervisor is sought.

“Mike has been on the Forest since 2006, first as deputy fire chief and became fire chief in 2011. His leadership and knowledge of the Forest Program of Work will provide the continuity needed going into the field/fire season,” said Forest Supervisor Tyrone Kelley in a press release.

“In addition to maintaining the current schedule of forest projects and initiatives,” said Minton, “I plan to maintain a level of consistency in the relationships with our cooperators, partners and tribes throughout the local area. This relationship continuity has both short term and long term benefits.”

While serving as supervisor, Minton will step down from the interagency fire chief role he was just appointed to in March.

The Six Rivers/Redwood Interagency Fire Management Organization was created recently to improve efficiency between the Six Rivers National Forest and Redwood National Park. Rick Young, the deputy interagency fire chief, will step in as fire chief for both organizations while Minton is forest supervisor.

Kelley was recently selected to be the Pacific Southwest Region’s director of engineering and moved to Vallejo last week.

There is also a current vacancy in the district ranger position of the Smith River National Recreation Area/Gasquet Ranger Distrct, but a new ranger is expected to be announced soon.
