The Del Norte Fire Safe Council has a new director and new board members, and the first meeting under the new leadership will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Crescent Fire Protection District building, 255 W. Washington Blvd, Crescent City.
Becky Barlow, the new director of the fire safe council, said they will be discussing how to update the Del Norte Fire Safe Plan and what grants and projects the council will pursue in its new makeup.
The future of the council was recently in question when Dan and Sharol Leavitt — the founders and leaders of the council — said they needed to step down due to health concerns and were having trouble finding replacements.
The council is a community-based wildfire prevention organization that helps property owners and tenants prepare their homes and communities for wildfires. The council has a cache of equipment including a wood chipper and a trailer full of chain saws, pole saws, weed eaters and other tools that can be used by the public to clear vegetation from homes.
The council is a way for community members to actively prepare and prevent wildfire threats to homes and communities and being an active member of the council can provide a great introduction to wildland firefighting careers.
Some of the projects completed through the Del Norte Fire Safe Council include fire breaks to protect Hiouchi and Gasquet and the installation of dozens of 2,500-gallon tanks on private lands for firefighting purposes.
