Firefighter guiltyof sexual assault

By Nicholas Grube

A former firefighter from the Gasquet Fire Protection District will need to register as a sex offender after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting two teenage girls.

Allen F. Mazenkas, Sr., 49, pleaded guilty to two felony counts of anal and genital penetration by a foreign object on a girl under the age of 16 and two felony counts of committing a lewd act upon a child.

As part of his plea agreement, Mazenkas will serve one year in Del Norte County Jail, with five years in a state prison hanging over his head if he violates the terms of his probation. He will also need to enter a sex offender treatment program and register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

Mazenkas was originally charged with 12 counts that occurred between August 2005 and February of this year, but due to a lack of evidence and Mazenkas' clean record he was offered a plea deal to only four of the counts.

"What we originally charged him with, there wasn't any physical, objective evidence," Del Norte County District Attorney Mike Riese said. "We could prove these four counts."

In addition to the lack of physical evidence, Riese said Mazenkas, up until this point, had a pretty clean criminal history.

"He has no record of doing this or any similar acts," Riese said. "He's got an absolutely spotless criminal history."

Mazenkas will be sentenced in Del Norte Superior Court at 2 p.m. on July 5.
