Flag Day event today

Crescent City Elks Lodge No. 1689 will hold its annual Flag Day ceremony today at 6 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, 359 H St.

The ceremony will be performed by the Crescent City Elks, Crescent City Emblem Club, the Sea Cadets and the Police Explorers. The history of all American flags will be covered, and refreshments will be served.

Flag Day is celebrated June 14 because that is the date in 1777 when the U.S. flag was adopted by the Second Continental Congress.

In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day; in August 1949, National Flag Day was established by Congress.

The U.S. Army also celebrates its birthday on this date.

For more information about the local event, call 464-4448.
