Fugitive caught by Brookings PD

A Eureka man wanted in connection with an armed robbery was apprehended by Brookings authorities Tuesday.

Zachary Scott, 33, was arrested around 6:40 a.m. following a pursuit north of Brookings,  Brookings Police Lt. Donny Dotson said.

Curry County authorities were notified about a vehicle Scott was driving north on U.S. Highway 101 by Del Norte authorities, Dotson said.

A Brookings police officer spotted the vehicle on the highway and pulled it over, but then Scott drove off, Dotson said.

A pursuit began, reaching speeds of 100 mph that two other officers joined, until Scott’s vehicle’s engine failed about eight miles down the highway, Dotson said.

Scott surrendered without further incident and was taken into custody.

Authorities are still investigating how Scott got the car, Dotson said.

Scott was extradited to the Del Norte County Jail later Tuesday for warrants on two Del Norte incidents.

The first warrant was for an Aug. 16 burglary from a vehicle parked at Elk Valley Casino. It included charges of petty theft, theft with a credit card, grand theft, criminal conspiracy and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The second was related to an armed robbery on Aug. 17 and included charges of armed robbery, carjacking and auto-theft.

Scott was sought for attempted murder and armed robbery after allegedly robbing a Crescent City Subway restaurant Aug. 17 and taking one of the employee’s cars down to Klamath, where he was spotted at the Salmon Festival and allegedly attempted to run over Yurok Tribal Police officers when confronted, authorities said.

Scott allegedly struck one of the officers as he was jumping out of the path of the moving vehicle, Yurok officials stated.

Officers shot at the vehicle as it departed.

Scott then allegedly crashed into the Klamath Bridge and carjacked another vehicle before dumping it in the Orick area, authorities said. There was evidence that he was struck in the leg by bullets, authorities said.

Scott was again in contact with authorities Aug. 20 when he was spotted near a stolen motorcycle around 11:30 p.m. near 14th and A streets in Eureka, authorities said.

He was able to escape down a back alley, authorities said.

When Scott was apprehended in Brookings, he had injuries to the calf and thigh area, Dotson said.

An investigation into the tribal officers’ shooting at Scott is being conducted by the county District Attorney’s Office.
