GATEWAY:BACK ON BEAUTIFICATION DETAIL

By Jennifer Grimes

Triplicate staff writer

Gateway is coming back to life this year. New coordinators Scott and Shirley Cook are putting a new beautification plan into action for the harbor.

At the north end of the inner boat basin, the Cooks are working with Harbor Commissioner Bev Noll and a work crew from Pelican Bay State Prison to build a deck and fill planters with little trees and daffodils.

Much more work remains to be done, but it has begun. And before long, we will have a new picnic area with a spectacular view of the harbor and Battery Point Lighthouse, Shirley Cook said.

The goal of the Gateway Partnership is to beautify areas frequented by the public - especially tourists. Crescent City is thought of as a gateway to the Redwood National and State Parks and therefore a destination for travelers.

Gateways goal to spruce up the harbor in particular has been an ongoing battle. Considered very much a working harbor, the area is crowded with concrete, industrial equipment and generally lacking in aesthetic pleasures.

At present, its mostly a broad expanse of cement, but should be spectacularly beautiful, maybe in a couple of months, Shirley Cook said.

Noll and Cook said once the new deck and picnic area are complete, it will be the site of a community brown bag lunch.

Gateway is the formal name of an informal group of volunteers who want to improve and maintain the community. The Cooks are currently in need of volunteers who can lend a hand on weekends or days off to plant flowers and arrange planters.

At their meeting at 5:30 p.m., Feb. 6, in the Rural Human Services building the Gateway coordinators hope to rekindle interest in the Beautification Task Force. Anyone interested in participating is welcome.
