Triplicate, Pilot introduce comprehensive coastal guide 

Imagine having a tour guide, mapping system, phone book, events calendar and daily updates all available at the tap of your finger — and all focused on America’s Wild Rivers Coast.

Covering 150 miles of coastline, the Go Wild Rivers Coast mobile application has been launched by the Del Norte Triplicate and its sister paper, the Curry Coastal Pilot, which together serve Del Norte and Curry counties.

“We’ve already added more than 1,000 items — 1,000 ways to enjoy the Wild Rivers Coast,” said Pilot Publisher Charles Kocher, “and we’re adding more every day.” 

“This is your free mobile guide to the Wild Rivers Coast,” said Triplicate Publisher Cindy Vosburg. “It shows you where to stay and where to play, plus daily weather, tides, events and more.”

The Go Wild Rivers Coast mobile application is available free in both Apple  iTunes and Google Play.  Easy-to-use scan codes appear in both newspapers today. Download links are online atwww.gowildriverscoast.com and on Facebook at Go Wild Rivers Coast.

Most of the articles and listings in the mobile app are also available online at www.gowildriverscoast.com.  Both the mobile app and the website are completely searchable.

After several months of development, “test driving” and a low-key launch, now the newspapers are ready to promote the mobile app with a “Go Wild!” theme.  That matches the new brand and theme of the semi-annual recreation guide published by the two newspapers.

“‘Go Wild’ is the simple invitation,” said Kocher. “What we’ve created is much more complex. We really hope users will explore the app to try out all the features with their smart phones and mobile devices.” 

For example, phone numbers, email addresses, web links and Facebook listings are all “live links” with one tap of a finger. Advertisement and some features have GPS mapping so that users can easily see what’s close to them or get turn-by-turn directions. 

Go Wild adds ways to be interactive: a tool to create personal postcards, a photo album based on user contributions, Facebook and Twitter links and a unique “Ask-a-Local” service for special questions. 

Recent questions were about blueberries and trap shooting, according to Kyle Curtis, the technology manager for the two newspapers.

The developers also added information that is updated daily: weather and tide forecasts localized for each community, news headlines and classified ads from the two newspapers, special events from Bandon to Orick and road reports from both Oregon and California.

“We also wanted to make the app fun,” said Vosburg. “Look for the ‘Wild Warnings’ and our ‘Say What?’ guide to pronouncing local names.”

Go Wild Rivers Coast was developed with the help of Bar-Z of Austin, Texas.  Three other newspapers in the Western Communications chain have developed two other mobile apps this spring — Go Northeast Oregon from LaGrande and Baker City and  Explore the Mother Lode from Sonora.
