Grants will help library with kids' items

By Katie Klingsporn

The Del Norte County Public Library has netted a pair of grants that enable it both to supplement its children's section with brand new booksand give books to local kids.

The first grant, which totals $1,050, came from the Del Norte Friends of the Library and the Libri Foundation, a non-profit based in Eugene, Ore., that matches local funds to enable small libraries bound by budget constraints to buy children's books.

The Friends raised $350, and that grant was matched at a 2-to-1 ratio by the foundation.

With this money, library director Patty Hector was able to purchase 62 books aimed at children in grades three through eight.

"They've been catalogued and they're about to go out on the shelf," Hector said.

With a nonexistent book budget, Hector has been able to buy few books in the last two years.

The second grant came from the California State Library's Reading is Fundamental Program, which has given Del Norte's library 1,700 books to give away to local kids.

The library's Wonderbus — the vehicle that transports a bus full of literacy tools all around the county — will be giving away the books at enrolled sites.

Each child enrolled will be able to choose three books, Hector said.
