Hash-for-gas offer results in arrests

Authorities say travelers were low on money and fuel

An attempt to obtain gas money went south for travelers headed north when, instead of taking the hashish they allegedly offered, a Walmart employee notified security at the Crescent City store.

Sheriff’s deputies arrested Randy Allen Blanchette, 42, of Eugene, Ore., and Micah McClendon, 31, who described himself as a transient, in the Walmart parking lot at 8:25 a.m. Thursday on suspicion of criminal conspiracy and selling marijuana, said sheriff’s Commander Tim Athey.

Deputies also cited Lonnie Jamison, 48, of O’Neals, Calif., on suspicion of criminal conspiracy and selling marijuana, Athey said.

A woman and an 8-year-old child were also present, which prompted deputies to contact Child Protective Services, Athey said. The woman was not arrested. Deputies also asked County Animal Control to respond because of the numerous dogs travelling with the suspects, he said.

“There were four people there,” Athey said. “Deputies cited three because they all had pot. They did not do anything with (the woman) because they couldn’t show that she was participating in the drug activity.”

The group was on its way to Eugene from San Francisco in a 1990 Chevrolet Suburban and a 1971 Volkswagen van and stopped in the Walmart parking lot to spend the night, Athey said. The next morning, the three men allegedly attempted to solve their shortage of money and gas by trying to sell hashish to a Walmart employee, he said. That employee notified store security, which called the Sheriff’s Office.
