Indian Health installing solar energy system

United Indian Health Services Inc. will install a solar system at its Potawot Health Village in Arcata that could generate about a quarter of the energy that the clinic uses.

The 40 kilowatt solar system would produce enough energy to power about the equivalent of 15 single family homes. The project comes from local tribe, businesses and grants, including a $250,000 California Health Facility Financing Authority grant. Working with Humboldt State University's Schatz Energy Lab, United Indian Health Services aims to eventually produce all its energy on site.

The nonprofit health group has touted the effort as a plan to help cut the need for that hinder from spawning in area waterways. The project also aims to highlight the relationship between community health and environmental health.
