Inmate to be charged with assault in stabbing of officer

A Pelican Bay State Prison inmate will face 17 charges after allegedly slicing a correctional officer’s forearm with a razor last September.

Jimmy Pashell, 29, a Southern California native, was held to answer on 17 charges ranging from assault with a deadly weapon to possession of a weapon by a prisoner following his preliminary hearing on Thursday.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred in Pelican Bay State Prison’s Security Housing Unit. Pashell is facing his third strike.

Pashell was showering in a cell in his SHU pod and was given a razor to shave on Sept. 10, 2012, said Correctional Officer Rafel Rosas, during his testimony at the preliminary hearing.

The shower cells have perforated metal doors with a slot to hand items through.

Rosas said when Pashell was finished showering he and a correctional officer went to retrieve the razor.

“I observed my partner reach in to grab the razor from the shower,” said Rosas. “I saw him pulling away from the port in a sudden movement.”

The correctional officer then began pepper spraying the inmate as his left arm bled, Rosas said.

The correctional officer suffered a deep laceration above his left wrist that required four stitches, according to court testimony.

District Attorney Investigator A.C. Field also testified relating a conversation he had with the victim.

The correctional officer explained that as he was reaching in to grab the razor Pashell grabbed his left hand and sliced his forearm, Field said.

After feeling as though Pashell wasn’t going to let go of his hand, the correctional officer began to pepper spray the inmate, Field said.

Pashell was upset with the correctional officer the day before for “something,” said Field, but did not have information to elaborate during cross examination by defense attorney James Fallman.

In 2006, Pashell was sentenced to 10 years in prison following a conviction in Los Angeles for second-degree robbery with use of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a felon.

In 2009, he was convicted of battery on a non-prisoner while at Corcoran State Prison and sentenced to eight years.

In 2011, he was convicted of resisting an officer with violence and inflicting great bodily injury at Corcoran State Prison and sentenced to eight years and eight months.
