The lead proponent of the 21st-century version of the Jefferson state movement is bringing the campaign to Del Norte County.
Mark Baird of the Jefferson Declaration Committee will speak about the proposal to create a 51st state from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Del Norte County Fairgrounds floral building in an event sponsored by the Del Norte Tea Party Patriots.
The idea of creating the state of Jefferson out of rural counties in Northern California and Southern Oregon had several attempts around the turn of the century, but the secession movement came closest in December 1941 when Judge John L. Childs of Crescent City was elected governor of Jefferson.
A torchlight parade in Yreka celebtrated the event, but when Pearl Harbor was bombed just days later, nationalist sentiment for the war effort brought the movement to a close.
Recently, the boards of Siskiyou and Modoc counties passed resolutions in support of forming Jefferson state. A similar resolution failed on a 3-2 vote in the Redding City Council this week.
