Jobless rate shows little change, lags behind state

Del Norte County’s preliminary July jobless rate was 12.1 percent, up 1 percentage point from the revised June rate but down 2.1 percentage points from a year ago, according to the latest state statistics.

The comparable, not seasonally adjusted California rate (9.3 percent) was up 0.4 percentage points. With the month-over rate increase, Del Norte slipped from 40th to 45th-best among the 58 counties statewide. Some surrounding county rates include Siskiyou (11.5 percent), Shasta (10.9 percent), Trinity (11.8 percent), and Humboldt (9.0 percent).

Marin (5.3 percent) had the lowest July rate and Imperial County the highest (26.1 percent). The comparable U.S. rate was 7.7 percent, down 0.1 percentage points over the month.

Total Del Norte industry employment was down 320 over the month as local schools cut back for the summer break. Over the year, the county was down 40 jobs. Nine industry sectors gained jobs or were unchanged and two contracted. Government cutbacks of 80 jobs offset otherwise positive net year-over private industry job gains.
