Del Norte County’s preliminary January 2013 unemployment rate was 13.6 percent, up 0.4 percent from the revised December rate, but down 0.7 percent from a year earlier.
The comparable, not seasonally adjusted, California rate (10.4 percent) was up 0.6 percent from December, according to the figures from the state Labor Market Information Division.
In spite of the increase, Del Norte improved from 38th to 35th (from the top) among the 58 counties statewide. Some surrounding county rates include Siskiyou (17.1 percent), Shasta (13.6 percent), Trinity (16.8 percent), and Humboldt (10.4 percent). Marin (5.8 percent) had the lowest January rate and Colusa County the highest (27.7 percent).
The comparable U.S. rate was 8.5 percent, up 0.9 percent.
Total Del Norte industry employment declined by 70 jobs from December to January, but was up 40 jobs over a year ago. Eight industry sectors gained jobs or were unchanged and three contracted.
Job growth compared to a year ago occurred in information (up 10), private education and health services, (20), leisure and hospitality (40), other services (10) and government (20).
Industries with no change included farming; mining, logging and construction; and financial activities.
Industries with losses included manufacturing (down 20); trade, transportation and utilities (20); and professional and business services (20).
