The Del Norte County Public will give those with late fees and long overdue materials the benefit of the doubt for one day.
"We want to give them an opportunity to unburden their conscience and bookshelves," said library director Russell Long. "No questions asked."
Those with overdue books, DVDs, videos and other materials can return them and pay no fines on May 12.
"We want our stuff back," Long said. "We're gonna try the friendly way first."
Some of the missing items date back a decade. The titles continue to clog the library's computer systems, although they fail to physically return to library shelves.
They also add up in lost dollars for the library, totaling more than $50,000 just for those who owe about $50 in fines or material costs.
The library district board agreed during a Thursday meeting to host the event. The board may later seek compensation from those who have kept library materials.
For more information, call the library at 464-9793 or visit the Crescent City branch at Price Mall. Library hours are Tuesday through Friday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
