Local residents call for repair of Emidio Memorial

Preservation of the Emidio Memorial at Beachfront Park highlights the Crescent City Council agenda for tonight.

Guy Towers, president of the St. George Reef Lighthouse Preservation Society said he would like to see the memorial preserved because it's an important part of Crescent City and World War II history.

"I've been keeping my eye on Emidio a couple years ago," Towers said, "and I noticed it was in really bad shape."

The S.S. Emidio was an oil tanker shot by torpedoes from a Japanese submarine in 1941. Five crew members were killed and the vessel eventually ran aground in the Crescent City harbor. Many pieces of the ship are still underwater, but a large portion stands at Beachfront Park.

Towers and Ron Nuss from Redwood Welding will speak with the council on how they can repair and maintain the monument.

"We just want to save an important part of history," Towers said.

The council also will decide whether it will approve the appropriation of $45,000 to hire consultants to help with the financial and legal planning of the Crescent City wastewater treatment plant reconstruction.

Tonight's meeting – which was rescheduled due to the President's Day holiday – will begin with Crescent City Police Chief Doug Plack giving a presentation about the FBI National Academy Program he attended in November and December.
