MURRAY CROWNED 2000 HOMECOMING QUEEN

From Triplicate staff reports

The setting could not have been any better.

With the crowd at Mike Whalen Field in a frenzy and the weather perfectly clear, Homecoming 2000 marked a night of pageantry for the student body at Del Norte High.

With the theme of Heroes, each class nominated its own princess, with the senior class honoring three of its own, each with a chance of being named queen.

As fireworks lit the skies, senior Jessica Murray was named the first homecoming queen of the new millennium.

Murray, along with Alana Bates and Callie Newton, were the three nominees for the honor of queen as chosen by their peers.

The senior three-sport athlete was bestowed the honor by the 1999 queen, Jamie Wright during the ceremony at halftime of the varsity football game in which Del Norte fell short 14-6 to the McKinleyville Panthers.

Prior to the announcement of the homecoming court, the evening featured performances by the Redwood Rockettes drill team, along with the Del Norte High cheerleading squad.

Then came the main attraction as each of the members of the homecoming court arrived via escorts.

The 2000 court was:

Freshman princess Desiree Mayhew escorted by her father, Ron Mayhew.

Sophomore princess Candice Fugate, escorted by her father, Kevin Fugate.

Junior princess Jackie Anthony, escorted by her father, Wayne Anthony.

Senior princess Alana Bates, escorted by her brother, Michael Bates.

Senior princess Callie Newton, escorted by her father, Gary Newton.

Senior Jessica Murray, escorted by her father, Bill Murray.
