Man, 71, attacked on walk

Multiple injuries sustained from 3 men, victim reports

A 71-year-old Crescent City man was brutally beaten and robbed while walking his dog Sunday morning.

Around 6:25 a.m., the man was walking on Howe Drive in Beachfront Park when he shined a flashlight on three young males, said Police Chief Doug Plack.

The males, without saying anything to the victim, began striking him in the head, face and neck area, Plack said.

It’s unclear how many times the victim was hit, Plack said.

The assailants then took the victim’s wallet, Plack said.

As a result of the attack, the victim suffered a laceration to his head, swollen right eye, cuts over both of his eyes, a bloody nose, and he lost a few teeth, Plack said.

“These assailants chose an older individual under the cover of darkness to commit these crimes,” said Plack. “The only way to describe it is that they were cowards.”

The attack was random, Plack said.

“This does not sit well with me or the department,” said Plack.

The victim went to Sutter Coast Hospital following the attack and was treated and released Sunday.

The investigation is ongoing, and the Crescent City Police Department is asking any individuals with information regarding the attack to call 464-2133 or the anonymous Crescent City Crime Tip Line at 218-4229.
