A long-time Crescent City resident died of unknown causes in the Del Norte County Jail over the past weekend.
Fifty-year-old Allen Paul Peters was arrested at 6:48 p.m. by the Crescent City Police Department on Saturday for public intoxication and an outstanding civil warrant.
Peters was booked into the county jail at 6:56 p.m. While under observation, he was non-responsive, meaning he was not breathing. He was pronounced dead at 8:59 p.m. at Sutter Coast Hospital.
The Del Norte County District Attorney's Office and the Del Norte County Coroner's Office are conducting a joint investigation into the cause of Peters' death.
Del Norte County Sheriff and Coroner Dean Wilson said a couple weeks will be needed to find out what actually killed Peters.
"There's nothing the pathologist could clearly see as to what caused his death," Wilson said. However, he added that they know the cause wasn't a heart attack or something else easily discernable.
Investigators now must wait for toxicology reports, which could take weeks to receive, Wilson said.
"We're just waiting on the toxicology," he said, "and hopefully that will give us some insight into the cause of death."
Crescent City Police reports on Peters' arrest were not immediately available.
