A 57-year-old Crescent City man died Saturday after his 2002 Dodge Caravan struck a redwood tree on U.S. Highway 199 north of Walker Road.
The man, whose name has not been released, was driving his minivan southbound on U.S. Highway 199 at about 11:45 a.m. when the vehicle traveled off the roadway and struck the tree, according to a California Highway Patrol press release.
Passersby were able to remove the victim from the vehicle, which had caught fire. The minivan became fully engulfed in flames and was completely burned. The driver succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The man’s next of kin had not yet been notified as of Monday evening, the CHP said.
CHP responded to the incident along with the Crescent Fire Protection District, Smith River Fire Protection District, Del Norte Ambulance, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office.
