Man gets arrested on suspicion of auto theft

A man was arrested on suspicion of stealing a vehicle Monday after he allegedly drove it away when the owner got out to talk to some people in Smith River.

Around 4:25 p.m., the truck’s owner called authorities to report her vehicle had been taken on South Indian Road, said Sgt. Chris Enriquez of the California Highway Patrol.

She had left her keys in the truck while she got out to talk, said Enriquez.

“That’s when (Dwayne) Lopez slipped into the truck and drove off,” said Enriquez.

CHP Officer Pete Gonzalez, who received a dispatch about the incident, caught up to the truck after it was driven onto South Bank Road, Enriquez said.

Gonzalez pulled the truck over, performed a felony stop and detained Lopez, 32, of Crescent City.

Lopez was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and vehicle theft, Enriquez said.
