Man held after wrench brawl

A local man’s alleged plan to confront another man to collect money backfired, authorities said.

Nathaniel A. Kemp, 37, of Crescent City, recently sold his truck to the other man, but was reportedly unsatisfied with the payment he received, said Del Norte County sheriff’s Commander Tim Athey.

Kemp allegedly went to the man’s house on the 200 block of Olive Street wielding an 18-inch pipe wrench and kicked in the front door to demand more money around 1:30 a.m. Thursday, Athey said.

An argument led to Kemp allegedly swinging the pipe wrench at the resident’s head and missing, instead striking his shoulder, Athey said.

The resident wrestled the wrench loose and a brawl ensued, Athey said, adding, “It was a knock-down, drag-out fight.”

Ultimately, the resident subdued Kemp until authorities arrived, Athey said.

Kemp was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, criminal threats and robbery, Athey said.

He was taken to Sutter Coast Hospital for a medical clearance before being booked into the Del Norte County Jail on $225,000 bail.
